ADHOC MAC: a new, flexible and reliable MAC architecture for ad-hoc networks - Wireless Communications and Networking, 2003. WCNC 2003. 2003 IEEE

چکیده
Ad-hoc networking, though an attractive solution for many applications, still presents many unsolved issues, such as the hidden-terminal problem, flexible and prompt access, QoS provisioning, and efficient broadcast service. In this paper we present a MAC architecture able to solve the above issues in environments with no power consumption limitation, such as networks for inter-vehicle communications. This new architecture is based on a completely distributed access technique, RRALOHA, capable to dynamically establish on a slotted/framed structure a reliable single-hop broadcast channel for each active terminal on the network. Though the proposed MAC uses a slotted channel, it can be adapted to operate on the physical layer of different standards, including the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access TDD, and the IEEE 802.11. The paper presents the mechanisms that compose the new MAC: the basic RR-ALOHA protocol, an efficient broadcast service and the reservation of point-to-point channels that exploit parallel transmissions. Some basic performance figures are discussed to prove the effectiveness of this protocol.

متن کاملEvaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...

متن کاملRandom access MAC for efficient broadcast support in ad hoc networks
Wireless communications are becoming an important part of our everyday lifestyle. One major area that will have an enormous impact on the performance of wireless ad hoc networks is the medium access control (MAC) layer. Current random access MAC protocols for ad hoc networks support reliable unicast but not reliable broadcast. In this paper, we proposed a random access MAC protocol, Broadcast S...

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
